Chapter 13 - The Net Closes

The second tactical operator froze, the heavy baton hovering mid-air for a fraction of a second before he slowly let it slip from his fingers and raised his hands above his head. He looked back at Richard, silently evaluating his odds, and then took two steps backward, completely abandoning the fight.

Marcus Sterling backed all the way against the velvet drapes of the study window, his face entirely drained of color. "Richard... the police sirens. Listen."

Faintly, underneath the steady drumming of the rain outside, the low, pulsing wail of approaching emergency sirens echoed up from the coastal highway below. Red and blue strobe lights began to flash intermittently against the dark windowpanes, casting chaotic shadows across the ruined study.

Richard stared down at the fake document on the floor, his chest heaving with suppressed fury. He looked up at Julian, who stood unharmed amid the scattered books and splintered wood.

"You think this is a victory?" Richard sneered, his voice dripping with venom as he slowly backed toward the private balcony doors that led out onto the rain-slicked stone ledge overlooking the cliff. "You might have the estate tonight, Julian, but the entire Vance Holdings conglomerate is already under my legal control overseas. By morning, your accounts will be wiped clean across three continents."

"You won't make it overseas, Richard," a crisp, authoritative voice echoed from the hallway doorway.

Everyone turned. Standing in the entrance, flanked by two uniformed state troopers and a federal marshal holding an open arrest warrant, was Elena Vance.

Richard stared at her in utter disbelief. "Elena? What in God's name are you doing?"

Elena stepped into the room, smoothing the front of her dark blue satin gown—still stained slightly from the gala—with ice-cold composure. She didn't look like a terrified accomplice anymore; she looked like a senior prosecutor delivering a closing argument.

"I told you from the beginning, Richard, I am a self-preservationist," Elena said smoothly, her eyes locking onto her husband with absolute contempt. "When you told me to forge the bank box override, you forgot one very important detail: federal wire fraud carries a twenty-year mandatory minimum. I made a deal with the DOJ forty-eight hours ago to wear a wire during every single planning session in exchange for total immunity."

Richard lunged toward the balcony doors, his hand reaching for the brass handle. "You bitch—"

Before his fingers could wrap around the handle, Frank raised his service revolver and fired a single warning shot into the hardwood floorboards right between Richard’s feet.

"Don't move another inch, Mr. Vance," Frank said calmly.

The federal marshal stepped forward, clicking heavy steel handcuffs onto Richard’s wrists with a sharp, definitive click.

As Richard was hauled away toward the landing, his eyes met Julian’s one last time with a look of pure, unadulterated hatred. But Julian didn't flinch or look away; he simply watched him go, knowing the nightmare was finally over. Or so he thought.
