Chapter 2 - The Weight of Silence

The ballroom was entirely breathless. Julian’s hands, which had rested so gently on Clara’s waist seconds ago, now hovered in mid-air as if he had just touched a hot iron. He slowly stood up, sliding Clara off his lap and onto the velvet-cushioned chair. The movement felt agonizingly slow under the gaze of two hundred elite guests.

"Julian, please, don't listen to them," Clara whispered, her voice trembling as she clutched the gold silk fabric over her stomach. The bulky object shifted unnaturally beneath the delicate material, a dead giveaway that shattered months of elaborate lies. "It's a medical brace. My doctor recommended extra padding due to the sensitive nature of the pregnancy."

"A medical brace made of goose-down filling?" Julian asked, his voice dangerously low. The warmth that had defined his demeanor toward Clara for the past eight months had vanished, replaced by an arctic chill. He looked at Elena, who was frantically signaling for her husband to pull her away from the table. "Elena, you seemed awfully quick to defend a medical brace. Care to explain why?"

Elena forced a tight, brittle smile, smoothing the front of her dark blue satin gown with shaking hands. "Julian, darling, nobody is defending anything. It’s just appalling how these kids run wild at formal events. Parents these days teach their children nothing about respect. We are trying to enjoy a charity gala, and this brat is spinning fairy tales."

"It's not a fairy tale," a calm, deep voice interrupted from the adjacent table. Marcus Sterling, Julian’s senior business partner and lifelong friend, stood up. He pulled his smartphone from his pocket, the screen glowing brightly in the dimming ambient light of the chandeliers. "My daughter doesn't lie, Elena. And neither do the estate cameras."

Marcus tapped the screen twice, and the crisp audio of a hallway conversation began to play through the room's acoustics. Clara’s voice echoed clearly from the speaker, instructing someone to grab a decorative yellow accent pillow from the guest suite closet.

Clara lunged across the table toward Marcus’s phone, her gold dress catching on the silverware.
