Chapter 6 - The Judas in the Boardroom

"Looking for your partner, Julian?" Marcus’s voice echoed down the concrete hallway, smooth and entirely devoid of the warmth they had shared over a decade of corporate victories.

Julian dropped his phone back into his pocket, his fists clenching at his sides. He took two slow steps toward Marcus, his eyes locked on his oldest friend. "You set up the audio file at the gala. You gave the little girl the security clip. Why, Marcus? If you were in bed with Richard all along, why blow Clara’s cover in front of two hundred of the city's most powerful people?"

Marcus chuckled softly, stepping closer under the sterile lights. He adjusted his silk tie with agonizing precision. "Because Clara is a clumsy amateur, Julian. She thought her little sofa pillow scam was the masterpiece. She wanted the spotlight, the social climbing, the title of Mrs. Vance. But Richard and I didn't spend four years hiding in the Caymans just to watch some gold-digger fumble a ten-million-dollar extraction with bad prop department choices."

"You wanted her exposed," Julian realized, the horrifying logic falling into place. "You needed a distraction so large, so humiliating, that my entire attention would be diverted away from the corporate restructuring votes happening tonight."

"Bingo," Marcus smiled, his eyes cold. "While you were busy dealing with a crying fiancée and a rogue sofa pillow in front of the city's elite, the emergency board meeting was already underway on the 40th floor of Vance Tower. Your uncle signed off on the emergency transfer of voting rights. As of eleven-forty PM, Richard Vance is legally reinstated as CEO, and you, my friend, have been unceremoniously ousted."

Julian lunged forward, grabbing Marcus by the lapels of his designer suit and slamming him against the reinforced steel door of the vault.

"You think a piece of paper signed in the middle of the night makes you invincible?" Julian growled, his face inches from Marcus's. "Richard is a convicted felon. The moment I present these transfer logs to the federal prosecutor—"

"Federal prosecutor?" Marcus interrupted, wheezing slightly under the pressure but maintaining his eerie composure. He reached up and pried Julian’s fingers away from his collar with surprising strength. "Julian, look at the timestamp on the transfer documents currently being filed with the SEC. They aren't signed by your uncle anymore."

Julian stared at him, breathless. "What are you talking about?"

"Your uncle had a sudden medical emergency about twenty minutes ago," Marcus whispered, a dark grin spreading across his face. "A severe reaction to his evening medication at the gala. Paramedics just rushed him to St. Jude’s. And according to his advance medical directive and power of attorney... guess who holds total control over his estate now?"

Julian released Marcus instantly, his mind reeling as the final trap snapped shut around him.
