Chapter 1 - The Banquet of Glass

The crystal chandeliers of the Grand Astoria ballroom cast a brilliant, unforgiving light across the tables laden with silver and orchids. Julian Vance sat at the head table, his crisp black tuxedo immaculate, his dark hair slicked back with practiced precision. On his lap sat Clara, his thirty-five-year-old fiancée, draped in a liquid gold silk slip dress that clung to her curves. The room hummed with the soft murmur of high society until an eight-year-old girl in a dark red velvet dress shattered the silence.

Clara clutched her midsection, her eyes wide with sudden panic as the faux velvet lump shifted awkwardly beneath her silk dress.

"That lady's baby bump is just a sofa pillow," the young girl announced, pointing a steady finger.

Julian’s head snapped toward Clara, his face hardening into absolute disbelief.

"What did you just say?" Julian demanded, his voice cutting through the ambient chatter like a knife.

Across the table, Elena, a striking woman in a strapless dark blue satin evening gown, surged to her feet. Her face twisted with pure fury as she slammed her napkin onto the crystal glassware.

"She’s a lying brat!" Elena shouted, pointing furiously at the child. "Don’t listen to a stupid kid!"

The little girl didn’t flinch. Her wide eyes burned with absolute conviction as she stepped closer to the table.

"I saw her take it out of the closet," the girl declared, her voice ringing clear across the silent hall. "And my mom has the security video on her phone."

Elena’s face drained of color, her eyes darting toward the exit before locking onto a single smartphone clutched in a guest's hand. Clara froze, her breathing shallow, every drop of blood rushing from her face as the suffocating weight of total exposure closed in around her.

Julian looked down at the gold silk dress, his hands slowly rising from Clara's waist as a cold, terrifying realization dawned in his eyes.
