Chapter 5 - The Ghost of Richard Vance

The figures on the statement danced under the harsh fluorescent lights of the vault. Ten million dollars. Transferred out of Julian’s personal holdings less than forty-eight hours ago, routed through three offshore accounts, and finally landing in an active trust controlled entirely by Richard Vance—his cousin who had been legally presumed dead after a yacht explosion in the Mediterranean four years ago.
Julian’s fingers tightened on the paper until the thick cardstock crumpled in his grip. Richard wasn't dead. Clara hadn't just acted alone out of desperation to win a board seat; she was an operative in a meticulously coordinated revenge plot orchestrated by the man Julian had helped send to federal prison half a decade ago.
"Is everything alright, Mr. Vance?" the bank teller asked, peering anxiously over the rim of his glasses at Julian’s pale, rigid face.
"Get me the head of security," Julian commanded, his voice shaking with a cold, contained fury. "Right now. I want every access log for this box going back twelve months. I want to know every fingerprint, every keycard swipe, every visitor."
"Sir, that requires a court order unless—"
"I don't give a damn about protocol!" Julian slammed his hand against the steel counter, the loud metallic echo bouncing off the concrete walls. "My signature was forged or duplicated. Someone accessed this box without my authorization, and if you don't pull those logs in the next sixty seconds, I will personally strip this bank of its operating license before sunrise."
The teller swallowed hard, turned to his terminal, and began furiously typing. Within moments, a green checkmark flashed on the screen.
"Access logs... box 412," the teller muttered, his eyes scanning the data stream. "There's a master override entry used three weeks ago. Authorized by... signed off by the executive vice president of compliance."
Julian leaned over the counter. "Who?"
"Elena Vance," the teller whispered, his eyes widening in sudden realization. "Your cousin’s wife."
Julian felt the room tilt. Elena wasn't just an accidental guest at the gala defending Clara; she was Richard’s bloodline link to his empire. The pieces clicked into a terrifying mosaic. The social circle, the charity boards, the engagement to Clara—every single milestone of Julian’s adult life over the past three years had been engineered by Richard from the shadows.
Julian snatched his phone, dialing Marcus’s number directly. It rang twice before clicking over to voicemail. He tried again. Straight to voicemail.

A sudden flash of light illuminated the subterranean vault hallway. Julian spun around. Standing at the end of the secure corridor, holding a smoking smartphone and smiling a cold, familiar smile, was Marcus Sterling.
