Chapter 7: Lily's Memory

That evening, Lily was well enough to sit up and eat warm soup. Julian sat on the edge of her mattress, stroking her soft hair.
“Lily, sweetheart,” Julian asked gently, “can you tell Daddy why you went into the big shiny door in the kitchen?”
Lily held her plush bunny tight against her chest. “A man gave me a letter through the gate yesterday morning while I was playing outside.”
Julian’s heart skipped a beat. “What man?”

“He was old, Daddy. He looked sad,” Lily whispered. “He told me there was a magical toy box inside the big silver door, and if I went inside, I could find a present for you to make you stop working so much.”
Tears pricked Julian’s eyes. His constant absence at work had made his innocent daughter vulnerable to a stranger’s mind games.
