Chapter 6: The Maid's Confession

Julian called Clara into the study alone. Instead of threatening her, he offered her a seat and a glass of water.

“Clara, I know you love Lily,” Julian said softly. “You read to her every night. Just tell me what happened yesterday.”

Clara wiped her eyes with her apron, her shoulders trembling. “An hour before you came home, a man called the estate landline. He spoke with a raspy voice. He said... he said he was an inspector checking the home's cooling systems.”

“Did he give a name?”

“No. But he knew things about the house,” Clara sobbed. “He told me to leave the key in the refrigerator lock because a contractor was coming. Then I heard a crash in the kitchen, saw the spilled wine, and saw the door shut. I tried to open it, but the heavy handle slammed shut!”

Someone had manipulated the household from afar, using an innocent maid as a pawn.
