Chapter 12: Forgiveness in the Dark

“I... I didn't know she was asthmatic,” Marcus stammered, his eyes dropping to the floor. “I wanted to lock the room to scare you, to make you open the ledgers... I didn't know she would fall ill.”
Silence stretched across the darkened study, save for the sound of rain hammering the windows. Julian had every right to call the police, to ruin this old man who had terrified his daughter.
Instead, Julian lowered his flashlight.

“My grandfather was a monster for what he did to your father,” Julian said softly. “If I call the police, this cycle of hatred just keeps burning down the next generation. I won't let my daughter grow up in a world built on revenge.”
Marcus stared at Julian in disbelief, tears welling in his wrinkled eyes.
