Chapter 5: Shadows at the Door

The following afternoon, Detective Miller arrived at the estate. He was a seasoned investigator with sharp grey eyes that seemed to digest every detail of the room.
He stood before the heavy refrigerator door, examining the lock. “No signs of forced entry. The key is antique. Only one exists, correct?”
“Yes,” Arthur spoke up politely, standing at attention. “I have kept that key in the master safe for thirty years, officer.”
“Yet yesterday, it was sitting in the lock when Mr. Vance ran into the kitchen,” Miller noted, looking closely at Arthur. “Who had access to the safe combination?”

Arthur didn't flinch. “Only Mr. and Mrs. Vance. And... perhaps young Clara, when she cleans the study.”
Clara, listening from the corridor, let out a small sob. “I didn't do it! I would never hurt little Lily!”
