Chapter 11: Face to Face

“You’re Thomas Croft’s son,” Julian realized, keeping his voice steady.

“Marcus Croft,” the old man corrected, his voice trembling with years of suppressed rage. “Your grandfather stole my father’s life's work. My father died in a cold, unheated apartment while Silas Vance built this palace.”

“I found the ledgers, Marcus,” Julian said quietly. “I know what Silas did.”

Marcus took a step forward, his eyes burning. “I wanted you to feel the fear my father felt. I wanted you to lose what was most precious to you in a cold, dark room!”

“She’s a child!” Julian yelled, his composure breaking. “Lily had nothing to do with what happened fifty years ago!”

Marcus flinched, his shoulders sagging slightly as if the weight of his own cruelty suddenly hit him.
