Chapter 9 - The Second Asset

The heavy black SUV threw it into reverse with a squeal of burning rubber, its tail lights flashing red in the dim concrete haze before roaring toward the exit ramp and disappearing into the afternoon traffic. Marcus pulled himself up from the concrete floor, coughing slightly from the thick cloud of radiator smoke and rubber dust, and immediately reached down to help Claire to her feet.

"Are you hit? Are you bleeding?" Marcus asked, his hands quickly inspecting her arms and shoulders for injuries.

"I'm fine," Claire said, brushing a speck of gray concrete dust off the sleeve of her charcoal blazer. She didn't look at the smoking wreck of her rented car. Instead, her eyes were fixed on the asphalt directly beneath the spot where the SUV had impacted.

Sitting amidst the shattered safety glass was a small, black USB flash drive that must have been dislodged from the dashboard of the attacking vehicle or dropped by someone lurking near the pillars.

Marcus bent down, picking up the small piece of plastic with a handkerchief and examining it closely. "That SUV didn't lose control by accident, Claire. That was a deliberate hit. Whoever is left on Julian’s payroll outside is trying to eliminate any remaining evidence before the trial."

Claire reached out, her fingers taking the flash drive from Marcus’s hand. "Julian didn't just have offshore accounts and corporate shell companies. He maintained a physical contingency vault—a secondary asset stash completely disconnected from the digital grid."

"How do you know that?" Marcus asked, pulling his phone out to call local law enforcement to report the hit-and-run.

"Because my father was a master locksmith, and when Julian remodeled our basement three years ago, he hired a specialty contractor from out of state to install a custom sub-floor safe," Claire said, walking steadily past the wrecked sedan toward the garage exit stairwell. "Julian told me it was for storing rare vintage wines."

Marcus hurried to keep pace with her. "And you think this flash drive contains the access codes or the physical location of that vault?"

"I know it does," Claire replied, holding the small plastic drive tightly in her palm. "Arthur Sterling didn't just send me the restaurant video. He spent thirty years working alongside Julian’s father, building the original foundation of that law firm. He knew every dark secret buried beneath the concrete."

They reached the street level, where the cool autumn wind hit their faces. Marcus flagged down an empty taxi at the curb, holding the door open for Claire. "Where are we going? Back to the mansion? The federal government has it completely locked down."

"Not the mansion," Claire said, sliding into the back seat of the cab and motioning for Marcus to follow. "We're going to the old downtown archives building. The building where Vance & Miller leased their very first office space back in 1995."

As the taxi pulled away from the curb, Claire plugged the flash drive into her smartphone using a small adapter cable. The screen flickered, and a single audio recording began to play, featuring a conversation between Julian and an unidentified man discussing a safety deposit box located beneath a city landmark.
