Chapter 8 - The Video on the Phone

The small phone screen glowed brightly in the dim light of the parking garage, casting a pale, cold reflection across Claire’s face. Marcus leaned over her shoulder, his eyes fixed on the moving image. It was a digital recording taken from a security camera inside a high-end restaurant booth, dated exactly six days before her wedding to Julian seven years ago.
On the screen, a younger Julian Vance sat across the table from a disheveled man who looked hauntingly familiar. The audio was slightly muffled by background restaurant chatter, but the words were painfully clear.
"Just make sure the forged documents are planted in her apartment tonight," Julian’s younger voice instructed coldly, sliding a thick white envelope across the mahogany table. "Once the Tribune publishes that retracted article based on my fake leaks, her career in journalism is completely dead. She’ll be too broken to ever dig into our pharmaceutical defense cases again."
The man across the table nodded, pocketing the envelope. "And if she figures out you orchestrated the leak?"
Julian had laughed—a cold, arrogant sound that sent a shiver down Claire’s spine. "She won't. She’s completely infatuated. Love makes smart women dangerously blind."
The video looped back to the beginning. Claire stood frozen, her hand still gripping the car door handle. The cold air of the parking garage seemed to freeze in her lungs as the full, sickening weight of her entire marriage settled over her. Every romantic dinner, every sweet word, every anniversary trip—it had all been a calculated, cynical neutralization strategy designed to protect his corporate corruption.
"Who sent this to you?" Marcus asked, his voice sharp and urgent as he scanned the shadowy corners of the parking garage. "Claire, look at the sender ID. That file was routed through a secure, encrypted relay server located inside the federal penitentiary."
Claire’s eyes raced across the screen until they hit the metadata attached to the video file. The sender wasn't an anonymous hacker. It was tagged with a prisoner identification number belonging to Arthur Sterling—the former senior partner Julian had committed to the psychiatric facility.
"Arthur isn't as medicated as Julian’s medical charts claimed," Claire murmured, a slow, grim realization dawning in her mind. "He’s been documenting Julian’s crimes for years, waiting for someone strong enough to open the black folder."
Suddenly, the harsh screech of tires echoed through the concrete garage. A sleek black SUV rounded the corner at high speed, its high-beam headlights blinding them instantly as it accelerated directly toward their position.

"Get down!" Marcus shouted, lunging forward and tackling Claire behind the heavy concrete pillar just as the SUV slammed into the side of their rented sedan with a sickening crunch of shattering glass and twisted metal.
