Chapter 1 - The Ring, The Folder, And The Ice

The hum of the modern open-plan office evaporated into dead silence as the heavy glass doors clicked shut. Julian Vance stared at Claire Vance, his dark blue suit suddenly feeling like a leaden straitjacket. Around them, the sea of colleagues who had been clapping just seconds ago froze in place. The brilliant diamond on Jessica Miller’s finger caught the harsh overhead LED light, casting a cruel, splintered glare across the white conference table. Jessica pulled her hand back, her red lips parting in a silent gasp of confusion, her red evening gown suddenly looking wildly out of place against the grim reality of the corporate floor.
Claire did not blink. Her dark hair was pulled back into a severe, immaculate knot that mirrored the absolute rigidity of her posture. She stood less than two feet away from the man she had called her husband for seven agonizing years, her beige sleeveless dress cutting a sharp, neutral line through the vibrant celebration. With slow, deliberate precision, she had placed the thick black leather folder directly over the pristine white surface where the champagne flutes still sat. Her thumb tapped the screen of her smartphone, locking the device with a soft, final click.
"Proceed now, freeze all joint assets," Claire said. Her voice was level, carrying a chilling lack of inflection that cut straight through the ambient noise of the building’s ventilation system.
Julian’s hand shot out, his fingers trembling as they hovered inches from the black folder before dropping back in a desperate, pleading arc. The smile that had graced his face just moments earlier twisted into an expression of raw, unadulterated panic.
"Claire, no, please," Julian choked out, his voice cracking as he took a half-step forward. "You don’t understand what you’re doing. We can talk about this in my office, away from everyone. Don't ruin this—don't ruin us like this."
Claire tilted her head slightly, her brown eyes devoid of any warmth. "Us, Julian? The law firm of Vance & Miller dissolved legally twenty-four minutes ago. Your personal accounts, the Cayman holdings, and the offshore real estate portfolios are already locked under federal injunction."
Jessica stepped between them, her face flushed under heavy makeup. "Claire, you have no right to barge in here making wild accusations! Julian and I have worked tirelessly to—"
"Quiet, Jessica," Claire interrupted, her tone dropping an octave. "You signed the compliance waivers too. Embezzlement from the firm’s non-profit trust fund is a federal offense."

Julian stared at her, his pupils dilated with sudden, mortal terror as he realized the black folder contained every single financial record he thought he had successfully buried.
