Chapter 4 - The Empty Estate

The wrought-iron gates of the Vance estate swung open with a hollow, metallic groan that echoed loudly in the damp morning air. Claire sat in the passenger seat of a rented sedan, watching through the tinted window as the federal seals were slapped across the heavy oak front doors of the mansion she had spent five years decorating. Every piece of imported Italian marble, every custom-built mahogany bookshelf, and every priceless painting now belonged to the federal government as collateral for restitution.

Her smartphone buzzed against her thigh. She picked it up, unlocking the screen to find an encrypted message from her lead forensic auditor. The freeze on the primary accounts was holding firm, and Julian’s defense team had already filed three emergency motions, all of which had been summarily dismissed by the federal judge.

"You didn't have to come here today, Mrs. Vance," the driver, a private investigator named Marcus who had helped her assemble the dossier, said quietly without taking his eyes off the road. "Watching them catalog your former life isn't going to bring any closure."

"It’s not about closure, Marcus," Claire replied, her voice steady as she watched a federal agent carry a box of Julian’s expensive wristwatches out to a waiting van. "It’s about accounting. Every single lie has a physical weight, and today I’m watching them weigh the garbage."

Marcus shifted the car into drive and navigated away from the sprawling estate, heading back toward the city center. "The arraignment is scheduled for tomorrow morning at nine. Julian’s high-priced defense attorney is going to try for bail, arguing that his flight risk is minimal now that his passports have been seized."

"He won't get bail," Claire said with absolute certainty. "The judge overseeing this district has zero tolerance for white-collar theft involving non-profit trust funds. Besides, Julian has backup accounts hidden under aliases that even my team only uncovered yesterday."

Marcus glanced sideways at her, raising an eyebrow. "Aliases? You found more money?"

"Not money," Claire corrected softly, turning her gaze away from the vanishing estate. "Leverage. Julian didn't just steal from the firm. He systematically ruined three other partners years ago to take control of the partnership. One of those partners is currently sitting in a private sanitarium, heavily medicated and legally silenced."

Marcus slammed on the brakes as a delivery truck cut across their lane, his knuckles whitening on the steering wheel. "Are you telling me Julian put someone in a psychiatric facility just to steal their voting shares?"

"I’m not telling you, Marcus," Claire said, opening her black leather folder and pulling out a yellowed medical chart bearing a signature that Julian had forged in 2018. "I’m proving it. And tomorrow morning, when Julian walks into that courtroom expecting a slap on the wrist, I’m going to hand this exact document to the prosecuting attorney."
