Chapter 5 - The Courtroom Gallery

The federal courthouse smelled of floor wax, old paper, and quiet desperation. Claire sat in the second row of the public gallery, her dark hair immaculate, wearing a sharp charcoal blazer over a simple black silk blouse. Two rows ahead of her, Julian sat flanked by two expensive defense attorneys who looked like they had just swallowed broken glass. His dark blue suit was noticeably rumpled, the white shirt collar slightly frayed at the edges, and the confident, arrogant posture he usually carried had vanished entirely.
When the bailiff announced the entry of Judge Harrison, the entire courtroom stood in tense silence. The judge, a stern-faced woman with iron-gray hair and sharp spectacles, seated herself and immediately adjusted a stack of legal briefs.
"We are here to hear arguments regarding docket number 44-B, United States versus Julian Vance," Judge Harrison announced, her voice echoing off the high mahogany ceilings. "The prosecution has filed a motion to deny bail based on newly discovered evidence of flight preparation and witness tampering."
Julian’s lead attorney, a slick man named Henderson, sprang to his feet. "Your Honor, my client categorically denies these baseless assertions. The defendant is a pillar of the legal community, a dedicated professional who has cooperated fully with—"
"Mr. Henderson," Judge Harrison interrupted coldly, "your client attempted to liquidate three separate cryptocurrency wallets registered under false corporate tax identification numbers less than forty-eight hours after his arrest. That is not cooperation; that is panic."
Julian leaned over, whispering frantically into his lawyer's ear. Henderson’s face paled noticeably, but he pressed on. "Those transactions were routine tax adjustments, Your Honor—"
"They were wire transfers to a numbered account in the Cayman Islands," a smooth, authoritative voice cut through the courtroom.
The gallery turned as Special Agent Miller walked down the center aisle, holding a fresh manila folder. He stopped directly in front of the prosecution’s table and handed the file to the lead prosecutor, who quickly scanned the contents and looked up with wide eyes.
"Your Honor," the prosecutor said, his voice ringing with sudden triumph. "We have received an eleventh-hour submission from an independent third-party auditor detailing an even graver offense. We have proof that Mr. Vance committed identity fraud and institutionalized wrongful confinement against former senior partner Arthur Sterling in 2018 to seize majority voting control of the firm."

A collective gasp rippled through the courtroom gallery. Julian whipped his head around, his eyes scanning the rows of spectators until they locked directly onto Claire sitting calmly in the second row. His face twisted into a mask of pure, unadulterated horror as he realized she wasn't just destroying his empire—she was burying him alive.
