Chapter 11 - The Sub-Basement Vault

The interior of St. Jude Parish smelled of old beeswax, incense, and centuries of accumulated dust. The stained-glass windows cast long, fractured beams of ruby and sapphire light across the rows of polished oak pews. An elderly priest in a faded black cassock emerged from the shadows near the altar, his brow furrowed in quiet confusion as Claire presented the federal preservation order.
"Father Thomas, I apologize for the intrusion, but this document authorizes immediate inspection of the lower diocesan archives," Claire said, her voice respectful but firm.
The elderly priest adjusted his wire-rimmed glasses, scanning the embossed federal seal at the bottom of the document. "The lower archives haven't been opened since the nineteen-nineties, young lady. The dampness down there is severe, and the structural integrity of the old coal chute has been questionable for years."
"That coal chute is precisely what we need to inspect, Father," Marcus added, stepping forward with a high-lumens flashlight already unclipped from his belt.
Father Thomas sighed, shaking his head slowly. "Very well. Follow me through the vestry. There’s a spiral iron staircase behind the confessional that leads directly down into the old storage vaults."
They descended into the darkness, the air growing noticeably colder and heavier with every step down the cast-iron stairs. The beam of Marcus’s flashlight cut through the thick dust motes, illuminating towering wooden shelving units stacked high with yellowed ledgers, leather-bound prayer books, and rusted metal filing cabinets.
"This is it," Claire whispered, stopping in front of a heavy iron door set directly into the stone foundation wall. A modern digital keypad had been bolted into the old stone beside the door, its green indicator light glowing faintly in the dark.
Marcus knelt down, shining his light across the keypad. "That’s a biometric lock combined with a mechanical combination wheel. It wasn't installed when the church was built. This is definitely modern work."
"Julian had it installed during the firm's renovation project in 2017," Claire said, stepping up to the keypad. She reached into her pocket, pulled out a small slip of paper containing a sequence of numbers from Arthur Sterling’s files, and began entering them one by one.
The first four digits entered smoothly, but the fifth digit caused the keypad to beep sharply with a red warning flash.
"Three attempts left before the system locks down permanently," Marcus warned, his voice echoing off the damp stone walls.
Claire closed her eyes for a brief second, breathing in the cold air, remembering the day Julian had proposed to her seven years ago in a quiet park, whispering a series of numbers into her ear as a "private joke" about their anniversary date. She punched in the final combination.

The heavy iron door clicked, and with a deep, pneumatic hiss, the vault swung slowly open.
