Chapter 3 - The Federal Encroachment

The sudden appearance of the federal agents drained the remaining color from Julian’s face. The taller agent, a broad-shouldered man with a scarred jaw and sharp gray eyes, flashed a leather-bound badge before stepping past the shattered remains of the celebration.

"Julian Vance?" the agent asked, his voice gravelly and devoid of any professional courtesy. "I am Special Agent Thomas Miller with the Department of Justice, Financial Crimes Division. You are being detained for wire fraud, corporate embezzlement, and money laundering."

Julian stumbled backward, his polished leather shoes squeaking against the pristine hardwood floor. He threw his hands up in a defensive gesture, his voice pitching higher in desperate denial. "This is a mistake! There’s a civil dispute happening here—my wife—my ex-wife—she’s manipulating corporate records out of personal spite! Look at her, she orchestrated this entire charade!"

Agent Miller didn't glance at Claire. Instead, he reached down, his gloved fingers resting firmly on the spine of the black folder that Claire had left on the white table. He flipped it open, scanning the first page with practiced indifference before looking back up at the sweating attorney.

"Mrs. Vance provided the forensic accounting trail six months ago, Mr. Vance," Agent Miller said smoothly. "We’ve been monitoring your offshore transfers since the spring. Today was merely the execution of the search and seizure warrants."

Jessica gasped, stumbling back into a towering ficus plant that wobbled and crashed to the floor, spilling dark potting soil across the white carpet. "I didn't know anything about this!" she shrieked, pointing a manicured finger at Julian. "He told me the firm's expansion funds came from his family inheritance! I’m just an employee! I’m innocent!"

Claire looked down at Jessica with a gaze so cold it seemed to lower the temperature in the entire room. "Your name is listed as the primary beneficiary on the shell company in the British Virgin Islands, Jessica. Your signature is on the wire transfer receipts dated last Tuesday."

Jessica froze, her mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. The reality of her impending ruin finally crashing down, she sank slowly to her knees among the scattered potting soil, her red evening gown staining instantly.

Julian turned toward Claire, his eyes wide with a mixture of betrayal and absolute helplessness. He reached out a trembling hand, whispering hoarsely, "Please, Claire. After everything we shared... don't let them take me away like this."

Claire stepped past him without breaking stride, her beige dress whispering against the floor. As Agent Miller clicked the steel cuffs around Julian’s wrists, Claire paused at the threshold of the glass doors and whispered back.

"You took my life, Julian. I’m simply returning the favor."
