Chapter 7 - The Chicago Secret

The heavy steel door slammed shut, cutting off Julian’s frantic screaming and plunging the courtroom back into an eerie, suffocating quiet. Claire remained standing in the second row, her posture rigid, her face an unreadable mask of absolute calm. Yet inside, those final words echoed like a siren blaring in an empty tunnel: I know what you did in Chicago!

Marcus was waiting for her in the hallway outside the courtroom, leaning against the cold marble wall with his arms crossed over his chest. As soon as Claire stepped through the double doors, he pushed off the wall and fell into step beside her, his expression grim.

"Did you hear what he yelled at the end?" Marcus asked in a low murmur, keeping his eyes fixed on the security guard at the end of the corridor. "The Chicago reference. Is there something in your past he’s planning to weaponize during the trial?"

Claire walked toward the elevator, her heels clicking rhythmically against the stone floor. "Julian is grasping at straws, Marcus. He knows he’s facing twenty years to life, so he’s trying to throw whatever mud he can find against the wall."

"It didn't sound like mud, Claire," Marcus countered sharply, hitting the elevator call button. "He said it with a level of certainty that suggests he’s been holding onto that information as an insurance policy. What actually happened in Chicago seven years ago before you met him?"

The elevator doors slid open with a soft chime, and they stepped inside the empty car. Claire pressed the button for the underground parking garage before answering.

"Seven years ago, before I was Claire Vance, I was an investigative journalist working for the Chicago Tribune," Claire said evenly, watching the floor numbers light up above the door. "I was investigating a massive pharmaceutical conglomerate for covering up fatal trial results. The lead attorney defending them in court was Julian Vance."

Marcus turned his head sharply, his eyes widening in sudden realization. "He didn't just meet you by chance at that charity gala? He targeted you?"

"He thought I was getting too close to uncovering his firm’s involvement in shredding the clinical trial data," Claire replied, her voice dropping to a whisper. "He approached me, wooed me, married me, and systematically destroyed my professional credibility by leaking fake financial reports under my name. That’s why I lost my press credentials and had to leave journalism."

The elevator stopped with a soft thud, and the doors opened to the dim, concrete expanse of the parking garage. Marcus stepped out slowly, processing the staggering depth of Julian’s deception.

"So your entire marriage was built on a foundation of preemptive neutralization," Marcus said, his voice laced with disbelief. "He married you to keep you quiet."

"Yes," Claire said, walking toward her rented sedan. "And now, he’s about to find out that keeping your enemy close is the deadliest mistake a predator can make."

As Claire reached for the door handle of her car, her smartphone lit up with an incoming alert from an unknown number. She tapped the screen, and a single, chilling video file began to play automatically.
