Chapter 2 - Shadows Across The Glass

The silence in the room grew suffocating as Julian tried to regain his footing, his fingers clutching desperately at the edge of the white table. The surrounding employees began to scatter like autumn leaves, whispering behind cupped hands and retreating toward the elevators. Only Julian, Jessica, and Claire remained anchored in the center of the vast, sunlit room.

"Julian, tell her she's lying," Jessica whispered, her voice shaking as she grabbed the sleeve of his dark blue suit. "Call corporate security. Have her escorted out of the building right now."

Julian didn't move. He couldn't. His eyes were locked on the black leather folder, knowing precisely what documents lay beneath its heavy brass clasp. Those pages detailed three years of systematic asset stripping, fraudulent charitable donations, and corporate espionage orchestrated to fund his lavish lifestyle with Jessica.

"Security won't come, Jessica," Claire said, turning slowly to face the younger woman. "Not when they received the audit report ten minutes ago. Every partner on the board has already accessed the digital duplicate."

Julian swallowed hard, his throat dry as sandpaper. He forced a strained, pathetic attempt at a calm demeanor, lowering his voice to a hoarse murmur. "Claire, let’s be reasonable. We built this firm together. We can handle this privately. You don't want to destroy everything we've spent our entire adult lives working toward, do you? Think of our history."

"Our history ended the moment I found the secondary ledger hidden in your study, Julian," Claire replied steadily. She reached down, picked up her smartphone, and tapped the screen once more. "You thought I was just a quiet background fixture, managing the household while you played the brilliant corporate shark. But every signature on those offshore accounts requires a secondary authentication key. My key."

Jessica recoiled, her eyes darting toward Julian with sudden suspicion. "You told me she didn't have access! You swore the accounts were secure under your sole authority!"

"Shut up, Jessica," Julian snapped, his facade of charm finally cracking completely. He turned back to his wife, his expression shifting from panic to venomous fury. "You bitch. You planned this down to the exact second. You waited for the engagement announcement just to humiliate me in front of the entire company."

"No, Julian," Claire said, stepping closer until the scent of her expensive perfume mixed with the cold air of the room. "I waited until the federal investigators had enough probable cause to ensure you can never crawl out from under this cell."

Before Julian could lunge forward, the heavy glass doors blew open again, and two men in dark federal windbreakers stepped inside.
