Chapter 8: The Gala Confrontation

Down in the grand atrium, the atmosphere was thick with the scent of expensive perfume, cigar smoke, and heavy floral arrangements. Elena stood near the sweeping marble staircase, laughing gracefully at a joke made by a prominent city councilman while her eyes scanned the crowd for Julian. When he finally descended the stairs, looking slightly ruffled despite his immaculate attire, a triumphant glint flashed in her eyes.

She excused herself from the group and glided across the polished marble floor, intercepting him near the bar.

"There you are," Elena said, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness for the benefit of the surrounding onlookers. "Our guests have been asking about you. Everyone wants to hear about the new philanthropic foundation you've been spearheading."

"I told you, Elena, I’m not in the mood for parlor games tonight," Julian muttered, picking up a glass of scotch from a passing waiter's tray.

Elena’s smile didn’t waver, but her fingers gripped the stem of her champagne flute tighter. "You will play the part, Julian, or I swear to God I will walk onto that stage right now and announce to every investor in this room that our marriage is a fraud, and that you've been harboring a pregnant maid in the east wing."

Julian froze, the glass halfway to his lips. He slowly turned his head to look down at her, his eyes flashing with lethal intent. "You wouldn't dare."

"Try me," she whispered fiercely, stepping closer so her lips barely moved. "You think I care about the company stock? I care about pride, Julian. And you wounded mine the moment you looked at her the way you used to look at me."

Before Julian could respond, the lights in the grand atrium flickered. A sudden, tense hush fell over the crowded room as the main doors at the far end of the hall slowly swung open.

Standing in the doorway, illuminated by the harsh flashbulbs of several uninvited tabloid reporters who had slipped past the security gates, was a figure no one expected to see. It was Clara, dressed in a simple blue dress, looking pale and terrified, standing right at the threshold of high society.

Elena’s face drained of all color. The entire room went dead silent, every eye shifting from Elena to Julian, and finally to the young pregnant woman standing in the center of the doorway.
