Chapter 13: A Reckoning in the Woods

Clara stood her ground, resting one hand protectively over her swollen belly as she met Elena’s cold, calculating stare. "How did you find us?"

Elena let out a short, humorless laugh, walking slowly toward the kitchen island. "Please, Clara. You think Julian’s amateur financial cleanup could outsmart my family's private investigators? It took us two months to trace the offshore shell company, but money always leaves a trail if you know where to look."

"Julian isn't here," Clara said, her voice steady despite the adrenaline pumping through her veins. "If you're here to serve papers or threaten us, save your breath. We gave up everything we had in that house. We don't want your money, and we don't want your empire."

Elena stopped just a few feet away, her eyes narrowing as she took in Clara’s advanced pregnancy. A complex mixture of resentment, jealousy, and profound sorrow flickered across Elena's face for a fraction of a second before her cold mask snapped back into place.

"You think this is about money?" Elena asked softly, stepping closer. "You took the one thing I couldn't buy, Clara. After the accident... after I lost our child ten years ago, Julian closed himself off. He built a wall around his heart and never let me back in. I thought our cold marriage was just the price of success. But then you showed up, and he gave you everything he denied me for a decade."

Clara swallowed hard, feeling a sudden wave of unexpected empathy for the woman standing before her. "I never meant to hurt you, Elena. None of this was planned."

"Planned or not, it happened," Elena replied, her voice sharpening again. "And now my family’s reputation is in ruins because the great Julian Vance abandoned his post for a pregnant housekeeper. My father wants to destroy him legally, financially, utterly."

"Then do it!" a deep, resonant voice echoed from the doorway.

Elena whirled around. Julian stood in the open doorway, his arms full of grocery bags, his dark eyes locked onto his wife with lethal intensity. The tattoos on his neck seemed to pulse with tension as he slowly set the bags down on the floor, stepping between Elena and Clara.

"Julian," Elena breathed, her composure finally cracking as she looked at the man she had loved and fought for over ten years. "You threw it all away for this."

"I didn't throw anything away, Elena," Julian said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "I finally woke up."
