Chapter 2: Shadows in the Estate

The silence that followed Julian’s unfinished warning was deafening. Elena did not move; her red dress seemed to absorb the light of the hallway, making her look like a phantom of vengeance. Without another word, she turned on her heel, her designer heels clicking rhythmically against the pristine floor until the sound faded into the distant wings of the sprawling mansion. She knew better than to push Julian when his jaw was set like carved granite, but the seeds of a darker reckoning had already been planted in her mind.

Down on the floor, Julian slowly extended a large, steady hand to Clara. She hesitated, her eyes flickering with a mixture of fear and lingering shock, before placing her trembling palm in his. He pulled her up with practiced gentleness, careful to avoid the glittering shards of the broken mirror that littered the Persian rug beneath them.

"Can you walk?" Julian asked quietly, his voice devoid of the commanding edge he had used on his wife just moments prior.

"I think so," Clara whispered, pressing a hand against her lower back as she fought off a fresh wave of dizziness. The stress of the confrontation had taken a heavy toll on her body, and the reality of her precarious situation washed over her in a cold sweat. She was a maid, an outsider in a world built on glass and pretense, carrying a child whose very existence threatened to tear down the foundations of the Manhattan elite.

Julian guided her away from the ruined corridor and into a quiet, sunlit sitting room nearby. He helped her settle onto a plush velvet sofa, pouring a small glass of water from a silver pitcher on the side table. Clara accepted it with a nod of gratitude, her fingers wrapped tightly around the crystal glass as if it were a lifeline.

"You shouldn't have provoked her," Clara murmured, looking down at her lap. "Elena already suspects the truth. Every day I stay under this roof feels like walking across a frozen lake in the middle of spring."

"Elena only sees what she wants to see," Julian replied, walking over to the tall arched windows that overlooked the manicured gardens outside. His reflection stared back at him in the glass—a man trapped by his own choices, bound by a past he thought he had successfully buried. "She thinks this house belongs to her. She forgets that I built the walls holding it up."

Clara took a small sip of water, the cool liquid calming the frantic beating of her heart. "What happens when the baby comes, Julian? We can't hide this forever. The staff is already whispering. The gossip travels faster than the security cameras."

Julian turned back to her, his dark eyes fierce and unyielding. "Nothing happens until I say so. I didn't survive twenty years in this ruthless world just to let a broken mirror and a jealous wife dictate my future."
