Chapter 11: A New Foundation

The Vermont cabin was small, rustic, and desperately in need of a coat of paint, but to Clara, it felt like a palace. The air smelled of pine needles and damp earth, entirely free of the suffocating perfume and artificial tension that had defined her life in the city. Over the next few weeks, Julian threw himself into the physical labor of making the cabin livable, chopping firewood, fixing leaky pipes, and turning the overgrown backyard into a vegetable garden.
For Clara, the quiet isolation provided a much-needed sanctuary as her pregnancy entered its final trimester. The constant stress and anxiety that had plagued her in the estate began to fade, replaced by a quiet, steady peace.
One afternoon, as Julian was stacking logs on the front porch, Clara walked out holding two mugs of hot coffee. She handed him one and leaned against the wooden railing, watching the sun dip below the distant mountain peaks.
"You know," Clara said softly, blowing on the steaming liquid, "you don't look like a high-powered Manhattan CEO anymore in those flannel shirts and mud-caked boots."
Julian chuckled, wiping sweat from his forehead with the back of his arm. "Good. That guy was an exhausted fraud anyway. This is real. What we have here, what we're building... this is the only thing that ever mattered."
"Do you ever think about them?" Clara asked, her voice dropping to a whisper. "About Elena, or the company?"
Julian stopped smiling, his expression turning serious as he looked out over the trees. "I think about the mistakes I made, yes. I stayed in a toxic marriage too long because I was afraid of losing control. I let ambition blind me to what was right in front of me. But I don't regret walking away. Elena has her empire, and I have my family. That’s a trade I’d make a thousand times over."
"She won't stop looking for you, Julian," Clara reminded him gently. "Her family’s reach is long. Sooner or later, someone will trace those financial transfers."
May you like
"Let them trace," Julian said, his jaw setting with grim determination. "I’ve legally severed all ties with the corporation. Every dollar of her family's money has been returned to their accounts. What I have left is mine—earned independently before the merger. We are entirely clean, Clara. No debts, no contracts, no strings attached."
Clara placed a hand over her rounded belly, feeling a gentle kick from within. She smiled, resting her head against Julian's broad shoulder as he wrapped his strong arms around her. The ghosts of Manhattan felt a million miles away, swallowed up by the quiet rustle of the Vermont pines.
