Chapter 7: The Gathering Storm

By Friday afternoon, the estate was transformed into a glittering palace of wealth and privilege. Valet parkers in crisp uniforms lined the sweeping driveway, guiding luxury sedans and vintage sports cars toward the grand entrance. Inside, crystal chandeliers blazed with light, illuminating the elaborate floral arrangements imported directly from the Netherlands. String quartet music drifted softly from the ballroom, mingling with the murmur of cultured voices and the clinking of champagne flutes.
Upstairs in the east wing, the music was nothing more than a faint, muted hum through the thick walls. Clara sat by the window, watching the endless stream of guests arrive below. She wore a simple dark blue dress that concealed her condition, though the physical strain of her pregnancy made even sitting upright an exercise in endurance.
A soft knock interrupted her thoughts. The door opened to reveal Julian, dressed in a sharp tuxedo that fit his athletic frame perfectly. He looked around the empty room before locking the heavy door behind him.
"You shouldn't be up here," Clara said, standing up to meet him. "If someone sees you missing from the ballroom..."
"Let them look," Julian said, stepping closer. His face was etched with fatigue, the lines around his eyes deeper than usual. "The party is a circus. Elena is playing the gracious hostess, collecting praise and endorsements as if our marriage isn't cracking right down the middle."
"How much longer can we keep this up, Julian?" Clara asked, her voice trembling slightly. "Tonight, the whole world is downstairs celebrating your success, and I'm locked away like a dirty secret in an attic."
Julian reached out, his warm fingers gently brushing against her cheek. For a second, all the noise, the wealth, the paranoia of the estate faded away. "Not much longer. I’m liquidating the secondary accounts on Monday. As soon as the transfer clears, we leave. Just you, me, and the baby."
Clara looked into his dark eyes, searching for any sign of hesitation. "And Elena? She won't just let you walk away with half her family's empire."
"Elena will get what she deserves," Julian replied grimly, dropping his hand. "She made this bed a decade ago when she turned our marriage into a corporate merger. I’m just finally closing the business."

Before Clara could reply, a sharp knock sounded on the heavy oak door, followed by Mrs. Gable’s muffled voice calling out, "Mr. Julian? The guests are asking for you in the atrium."
Julian cursed under his breath, his jaw tightening. He gave Clara one last intense look before turning toward the door. "Stay here. Don't open this door for anyone until I come back."
