Chapter 12: The Storm Before the Dawn

Peace, however, is a fragile thing. Two months after their escape, as the first autumn leaves began to turn gold and red, the illusion of complete isolation shattered.
It was a Tuesday afternoon. Julian had driven into the nearby town to pick up medical supplies and groceries for Clara, whose due date was fast approaching. Clara was sitting at the wooden kitchen table, organizing some paperwork, when a sharp crunch of gravel echoed from the driveway outside.
She froze. No delivery trucks or local neighbors ever approached down their private, unmarked lane.
Slowly, she stood up, walking toward the front window that overlooked the driveway. A sleek black sedan—identical to the ones belonging to Elena’s private security detail—was parked right beside Julian’s truck.
Panic flared in Clara’s chest, cold and sharp. She backed away from the window, her hands trembling as she grabbed her phone from the counter. Before she could dial Julian’s number, a heavy knock echoed through the cabin.
"Clara! I know you're in there!"
The voice belonged not to Julian, nor to any security agent, but to Elena herself. The tone was chillingly calm, devoid of the hysterical anger Clara remembered from the night of the broken mirror.
Clara stood motionless in the center of the kitchen, her heart hammering against her ribs. She had nowhere to run. The back door led straight into the dense forest, but in her heavily pregnant state, she wouldn't make it a hundred yards before collapsing.
The front door handle rattled violently, and then the heavy oak door swung open—Julian had forgotten to lock it when he rushed out earlier that morning.

Elena stepped into the cabin, dressed in an understated beige trench coat and designer boots that looked absurdly out of place against the rustic pine floors. Her blonde hair was tied back in its familiar tight bun, and her expression was terrifyingly serene as her sharp eyes scanned the room, finally locking onto Clara standing near the kitchen island.
"Well, well," Elena murmured, taking a slow step forward. "I must admit, hiding out in the backwoods of Vermont wasn't quite what I expected from my runaway husband and his little maid."
