Chapter 3: The Weight of Inheritance

The following morning, the morning light did little to warm the cavernous halls of the estate. Elena sat at the massive mahogany dining table, her posture immaculate, sipping black coffee from a porcelain cup that bore the family crest. She had not slept. The image of Julian kneeling beside Clara, wearing an expression of deep, protective tenderness, replayed on an endless loop behind her tired eyes. It was a look he had not directed at Elena in years—not since the tragic loss of their own chance at a family, an event that had hollowed out their marriage and left behind a polite, contractual shell.

The heavy double doors swung open, and Julian walked in, dressed immaculately in a charcoal business suit, though he had discarded his tie. He paused when he saw her, noting the cold, calculated look in her eyes. He knew that quiet exterior well; it always preceded a calculated strike.

"You’re up early," Julian remarked neutrally, pulling out the chair opposite her without waiting for an invitation.

"I have a lot on my mind," Elena replied, her voice eerily calm as she set her cup down. "Namely, the girl upstairs. I want her gone by noon, Julian. Her contract was for general housekeeping, not for disrupting the household dynamic."

"Clara stays," Julian said flatly, spreading a napkin across his lap.

Elena let out a sharp, joyless laugh. "Is that an order? Are we at the point in our marriage where you issue decrees regarding the hired help? What is she to you, Julian? A charity case? Or is there something else you forgot to mention when we signed our prenuptial agreement?"

Julian didn’t flinch. He picked up his fork, moving a piece of fruit around his plate before looking up. "Clara has nowhere to go. And under the terms of this estate's governance, employment termination requires board review, which I control."

"Don't quote corporate law to me," Elena snapped, leaning forward, the slit of her red dress parting slightly. "I know why you're protecting her. Everyone in this zip code knows how vulnerable men of your age get when a young face enters the picture. But to bring her here—into our home—is a humiliation I will not tolerate."

"You think this is about an affair?" Julian asked, a dangerous edge creeping into his tone. "You give yourself too much credit, Elena. Not everything in this house revolves around your paranoia."

"Then prove it," she challenged, narrowing her eyes. "Fire her today, or I call my father's legal team and we begin dismantling every single asset you've accumulated since the wedding."

Julian went completely still. The mention of her father—a powerful patriarch with deep political ties—was a tactical nuclear option. But Julian was not a man easily intimidated by threats, especially when they touched upon the one secret he had sworn to protect with his life.
