Chapter 5: The Gala Invitation

By evening, the initial storm in the dining room had subsided into an icy, impenetrable frost. Elena had retreated to her private studio on the third floor, surrounded by architectural blueprints and design portfolios, though her mind was entirely focused on her next move. She knew Julian; he was a fortress, but every fortress had a weak point. She just needed to find the chink in his armor before he managed to secure Clara's position permanently.

Downstairs, the estate administrator delivered a heavy, cream-colored envelope to Julian’s study. It was an invitation to the annual Heritage Foundation Gala, an elite gathering of New York’s most influential power players, scheduled for the following weekend. Attendance was mandatory for anyone wishing to maintain status in the upper echelons of society.

Julian stared at the embossed gold lettering on the card. He knew Elena would use the event to put on a flawless public display of marital harmony, projecting an image of untouchable perfection to the world while their private life crumbled into ash. It was a performance they had perfected over a decade of marriage.

The door to the study opened quietly, and Elena glided inside. She had changed into a tailored emerald evening gown that clung to her figure, her blonde hair styled in an intricate twist. She looked every bit the powerful corporate heiress she was.

"I trust you saw the invitation," Elena said, her voice smooth and devoid of any lingering heat from the morning's confrontation.

"I did," Julian replied, not looking up from his desk. "We’ll attend. We always do."

"Good," Elena replied, walking slowly toward his desk, her fingers trailing lightly over the polished mahogany surface. "Because I’ve already informed the press committee that we will be making a special announcement regarding our philanthropic initiatives this year. I expect you to be on your best behavior, Julian. No distractions. No staff drama."

Julian looked up, meeting her cold, calculating gaze. He knew exactly what she was implying. She was using the gala as a stage to assert dominance, to signal to her inner circle—and to Julian—that she was still the queen of this domain.

"And Clara?" Julian asked deliberately, testing the waters.

Elena’s smile did not reach her eyes. "Clara will remain locked away in the east wing for the entire weekend. The staff can handle her meals. If she steps foot outside her quarters while our guests are touring the estate, I will personally ensure she leaves this property with nothing more than the clothes on her back."

Julian stood up slowly, towering over the desk. The air between them grew thick with unspoken tension. "Test me, Elena. See what happens when you push too hard."
