Chapter 8 - The Nursery Secret

Upstairs in the nursery, the soft glow of the nightlight cast a warm, comforting amber hue across the walls covered in hand-painted animal murals. Little Lily stirred in her bed, turning over and murmuring softly in her sleep. Standing silently beside the white wooden crib was Clara, her hands trembling as she reached beneath the miniature sink in the corner.
Her fingers brushed against a small strip of heavy-duty duct tape. With a quick, quiet pull, the black encrypted flash drive came loose into her palm.
Clara stared at the tiny piece of plastic that held the power to destroy Julian’s entire life—and potentially cost her own. The threat from the scarred man in the hallway still echoed menacingly in her mind. She couldn't trust Julian, but she couldn't trust the mysterious stranger either. She was completely alone, trapped in a web of deceit of her own making.
Suddenly, the bedroom door creaked open with a slow, agonizing groan.
Clara froze, quickly slipping the flash drive into the deep pocket of her black maid's apron as she turned around.
Standing in the doorway silhouette was Julian. His dark suit jacket was gone, his sleeves rolled up to his elbows, and his expression was completely unreadable in the dim amber light.
"Clara," Julian said softly, his voice smooth and dangerously calm as he stepped into the room. "What are you doing in here in the dark?"
Clara forced her breathing to remain even, though her heart was hammering a frantic rhythm against her ribs.
"I heard a noise, Mr. Vance. I just came up to check on Lily," Clara replied, keeping her voice carefully measured. "The police have been asking a lot of questions downstairs. We need to figure out what our next move is."
Julian walked closer, stopping just inches away from her. The scent of expensive cologne mixed with the metallic tang of fear hung heavily in the air between them.
"The police are a minor nuisance, Clara," Julian whispered, reaching out to gently brush a stray lock of blonde hair away from her face. His thumb brushed against her cheek with terrifying tenderness. "What truly concerns me is whether or not you remembered our agreement."

Clara looked up into his cold, calculating eyes, realizing with sudden, crushing horror that Julian already knew she had found the flash drive.
