Chapter 7 - Fractured Trust

The blinding fluorescent lights of the police precinct buzzed monotonously, casting a sterile pallor over the small visitation booth. Elena sat behind the heavy glass partition, her wrists resting calmly on the metal table, wearing the standard-issue orange jumpsuit. Her eyes, though shadowed by exhaustion, burned with a terrifying, absolute clarity that unnerved the young rookie officer standing guard in the corner.

The heavy door creaked open, and Detective Vance walked in, taking the seat opposite Elena with a weary sigh.

"Your husband’s legal team just filed a motion for your immediate psychiatric evaluation and temporary institutionalization," Vance said, leaning his elbows on the glass divider. "They claim you're a danger to yourself and everyone around you."

Elena didn't blink. She slowly pressed her palms flat against the cold glass, looking directly into Vance’s eyes.

"Julian is a master manipulator, Detective," Elena said, her voice eerily steady. "He didn't just build a financial empire; he built a fortress of lies. That maid, Clara, isn't an innocent victim caught in the crossfire. She’s his accomplice. She helped him move the stolen funds out of my family’s estate before he tried to poison me."

Vance frowned, flipping open his small leather notebook.

"We checked Clara’s background. She has no criminal record, and she’s worked as a nanny and maid for elite families for over a decade with glowing reviews," Vance pointed out. "Why would she risk everything to help Julian?"

A bitter, humorless smile touched the corners of Elena’s lips.

"Because she thinks she’s special. She thinks Julian actually loves her," Elena whispered, leaning closer to the glass. "Ask him about his first wife, Detective. Ask him what happened in Zurich five years ago to the woman whose life insurance policy funded this entire suburban dream house."

Vance stared at her, struck by the absolute conviction in her voice.

"We already ran checks on his first wife," Vance said slowly. "She died in a tragic boating accident off the coast of Italy. The case was closed."

Elena let out a short, chilling laugh that echoed off the concrete walls.

"Accident? Julian doesn't believe in accidents, Detective. And if you don't go back to that house right now and protect Clara, she’s going to end up at the bottom of the lake too."
