Chapter 10 - The Siege

"Federal and local warrants! Clear the perimeter!" Detective Vance’s commanding voice echoed sharply up the stairwell, shattering the tense silence of the nursery.
Julian didn't panic. He didn't run. Instead, he maintained his eerie, calculated composure, fixing Clara with a final, piercing look before walking calmly toward the bedroom window that overlooked the sprawling backyard gardens.
"Remember what I told you, Clara," Julian whispered over his shoulder just as heavy footsteps rushed up the wooden stairs. "If I go down, I'm taking everyone in this house straight to hell with me."
With a swift motion, Julian slipped out the second-story window onto the sloping roof, disappearing into the dark foliage just as the nursery door burst open. Detective Vance, weapon drawn and breathing heavily, rushed into the room, flanked by two armed officers in tactical gear.
Vance scanned the room, his eyes darting from the sleeping little girl in the bed to Clara, who stood frozen near the miniature sink, her hands raised slightly in surrender.
"Where is he?" Vance demanded, lowering his weapon just a fraction as he assessed the chaotic scene.
"He went out the roof window," Clara choked out, her knees finally buckling under the immense strain as she slid down the wall onto the carpeted floor. "He said... he said the files are already set to release automatically."
Vance cursed under his breath, signaling the officers to secure the perimeter and check the roof access. He walked over to Clara, kneeling down beside her with a concerned, steady expression.
"Are you alright, Clara? Did he hurt you?" Vance asked, checking her arms and neck for injuries.
Clara looked up at the detective, her eyes wide with a mixture of shock and desperate realization. She slowly reached into her apron pocket and pulled out the small black flash drive, handing it over to Vance with trembling fingers.
"It’s a decoy," Clara whispered, tears finally spilling over her lashes. "He told me the real data is already out there, programmed to destroy everything. But... I don't think he lied about everything. There’s something else in his office safe. Something he didn't want anyone to find."
Vance took the drive, his expression turning grim. He stood up and pulled out his radio.
