Chapter 2 - Echoes in the Hallway

Julian’s strong arms wrapped securely around Clara and little Lily, shielding them against the cold tile of the kitchen floor. The distant wail of sirens outside grew louder, cutting through the heavy, suffocating silence of the once-peaceful home. Clara’s shoulders shook violently as she buried her face in Julian’s dark suit jacket, her muffled sobs echoing off the high, modern ceilings. Lily clutched a torn yellow dress strap, her wide, tear-filled eyes fixed entirely on the doorway where Elena had just been pulled away by the authorities.
"It’s over, Clara. You’re safe now," Julian whispered, his voice trembling slightly as he pressed a gentle kiss to the top of the terrified little girl’s head.
Clara pulled back just enough to look into Julian’s eyes, her own expression a mix of profound relief and lingering terror.
"She knew, Julian," Clara choked out, wiping a trembling hand across her tear-streaked face. "Elena found the file in the safe. She figured out everything about the offshore accounts and the transfer."
Julian’s face instantly hardened, the comforting warmth vanishing from his expression as a cold, calculating look took over. He glanced quickly toward the shattered kitchen counter, making sure the fragments of the wooden bat completely hid the small, encrypted flash drive that had slipped out of Elena’s pocket during the struggle.
"Keep your voice down," Julian warned sharply, his grip tightening defensively around Clara’s arm. "We can't talk about that here. Not with the police still searching the perimeter."
Footsteps approached the kitchen entrance, heavy and deliberate. Both adults snapped their heads toward the threshold, expecting a police investigator. Instead, standing in the shadows of the hallway was Detective Vance, holding a small, clear evidence bag containing a familiar piece of jewelry—a heavy gold signet ring that definitely did not belong to Elena.
"Mr. Vance, I thought you were talking to my wife outside," Julian said, standing up slowly while keeping Clara and Lily half-hidden behind him.
Detective Vance stepped into the light, dangling the gold ring by its edge.
"We found this on the kitchen floor near the broken bat, Mr. Vance," the detective said coldly, his eyes locking onto Julian with intense suspicion. "And for the record, Mrs. Elena claims she wasn't trying to hurt the maid at all. She said she was trying to destroy the ring to expose a murder plot."

Julian swallowed hard, his throat suddenly completely dry as the room seemed to spin.
