Chapter 3 - The Weight of Gold

The metallic gleam of the gold signet ring caught the harsh overhead kitchen lights, casting a tiny, sharp reflection across the blood-flecked marble. Julian stared at the family heirloom, a heirloom he had sworn to Detective Vance was lost months ago during a business trip in Zurich. His heart hammered violently against his ribs, a frantic rhythm that threatened to break through his composed exterior.
"That's impossible," Julian managed to say, his voice maintaining a forced, icy calm. "I lost that ring in Europe over six months ago. How did it end up under our kitchen counter?"
Detective Vance took a deliberate step closer, his sharp eyes narrowing as he scanned Julian’s tense posture and the way Clara instinctively shielded little Lily behind her skirt.
"That's precisely what I intend to find out, Mr. Vance," Vance replied, his tone laced with heavy skepticism. "Especially since forensics just pulled fresh fingerprints off the band. And spoiler alert—they don't belong to your wife, and they certainly don't belong to your maid."
Clara gasped softly, her hand flying up to cover her mouth as color drained completely from her face. She looked from the detective to Julian, her eyes communicating a silent, panicky warning that screamed of betrayal and impending doom. Julian caught the look and immediately stepped sideways, casually blocking the detective's line of sight toward Clara.
"My wife is clearly unstable, Detective," Julian insisted, forcing a bitter, dismissive laugh that sounded hollow even to his own ears. "She’s been having paranoid delusions for months. She probably found some old replica online, planted it here, and manufactured this entire violent episode to frame me and ruin my reputation."
Vance didn't smile. He slowly lowered the evidence bag, keeping his gaze locked dead onto Julian’s eyes.
"Delusions are one thing, Mr. Vance. But physical evidence coupled with emergency dispatch recordings tells a very different story," Vance said softly, pulling a small audio recorder from his coat pocket. "We pulled the 911 log from five minutes before the attack. A frantic female voice called dispatch, screaming that her husband was trying to poison her, and begging for police protection before she was violently cut off."

Julian froze entirely, the color completely draining from his face as the trap finally snapped shut around him.
