Chapter 13 - The Final Confrontation

The thick, acrid smoke burned Clara’s throat and eyes as she coughed violently, pressing her face against the rough carpet. Through the swirling gray haze, heavy footsteps approached the desk. A pair of polished leather shoes stepped into view right beside where Clara and Detective Vance lay.

"You really should have left well enough alone, Detective," Julian’s voice cut smoothly through the smoke, sounding frighteningly close.

Vance pushed himself up, coughing, and reached instinctively for his firearm holstered at his waist. But before he could draw his weapon, a heavy object struck him across the shoulder, sending him crashing back down onto the hardwood floor with a dull thud.

Clara looked up, her tear-filled eyes wide with terror. Standing over them was Julian, holding a heavy iron fireplace poker, his expression devoid of any human emotion.

"Julian... stop. It's over. The tape is in the hands of the police," Clara gasped, choking on the smoke as she tried to crawl backward toward the door.

Julian looked down at her with a cold, detached smile.

"The tape is a localized recording, Clara. It doesn't mean a thing if no one makes it out of this house alive," Julian said softly, raising the heavy iron poker above his head with both hands. "You were supposed to be the perfect scapegoat. Why couldn't you just play your part?"

Just as Julian began to swing the iron poker down toward Clara, the heavy study door burst open with a resounding crash.

Framed in the doorway through the clearing smoke stood Elena, wearing her white dress, her hair slightly disheveled, holding the wooden baseball bat from the kitchen with a fierce, unwavering fury in her eyes.

"Put the poker down, Julian," Elena commanded, her voice ringing out crystal clear and commanding over the hiss of the smoke canister.

Julian froze mid-swing, slowly lowering the iron poker as he turned his head to face his wife, a dark, calculating sneer crossing his face.

"You always did know how to ruin a perfectly good ending, Elena," Julian whispered, slowly turning to face her.
