Chapter 6 - The Unseen Witness

The cold steel of the blade pressed slightly deeper against Clara’s skin, sending a shiver of pure dread down her spine. Her mind raced frantically, searching for a way out of the suffocating grip. With a sudden burst of adrenaline, Clara drove her elbow backward, catching her unseen attacker squarely in the ribs. A sharp grunt of pain echoed in the hallway as the grip loosened just enough for her to break free.

Clara stumbled forward, gasping for air, and spun around to face her assailant, expecting to see Julian.

Instead, standing in the dim light of the corridor was a stranger—a tall, scarred man wearing a dark janitorial uniform, holding the very same gold signet ring Detective Vance had recovered from the kitchen floor.

"You dropped your leverage, Miss Clara," the man rasped, flashing a jagged, unsettling smile that didn't reach his cold eyes. "Julian might pay your bills, but he doesn't own my loyalty. Not anymore."

Clara backed away slowly, pressing her spine firmly against the wallpapered wall as her chest heaved.

"Who are you? What do you want with Julian and me?" she demanded, trying desperately to keep her voice from shaking.

The man stepped forward, dangling the gold ring on his pinky finger as it caught the faint moonlight.

"I'm the guy who cleaned up the mess ten years ago at the mountain cabin," the man whispered, his smile vanishing into a grim, menacing line. "The mess Julian swore he handled himself. If you want to survive the next twenty-four hours, you’re going to hand me the flash drive Elena hid before the police arrived. Otherwise, the next blade won't just graze your neck."

Clara’s blood ran cold. The flash drive—the one containing the encrypted bank records and the hidden security footage of Julian’s dark double life—was currently taped to the underside of the nursery sink upstairs, just a few feet away from sleeping little Lily.

"I don't know what you're talking about," Clara lied quickly, her eyes darting toward the staircase.

The scarred man laughed, a low, grating sound that chilled her to the bone.

"Don't lie to me, Clara. Little Lily talks in her sleep. And she told her favorite nanny all about the shiny little key mommy hid."
