Chapter 5 - Shadows of the Past

Back at the luxurious suburban home, the forensic team had finally packed up their heavy equipment, leaving the front door unlocked and the kitchen eerily quiet. Clara walked slowly through the living room, the heel of her shoe clicking softly against the polished hardwood floor. Little Lily was fast asleep upstairs in her pink canopy bed, completely exhausted from the morning's terrifying ordeal.

Clara stopped in front of the grand mahogany bookshelf near the fireplace. Her trembling fingers reached out and traced the spine of a heavy, leather-bound photo album tucked away on the bottom shelf—a book Julian had explicitly forbidden anyone from touching.

She pulled the album out, blowing a thin layer of dust off the cover. As she flipped it open, old photographs spilled out onto the Persian rug. Clara knelt down to pick them up, but froze when her eyes landed on a photograph dated ten years prior.

It showed a much younger Julian standing outside a desolate cabin in the mountains, smiling broadly while standing next to a woman who looked strikingly, hauntingly similar to Elena—except for the dark, unmistakable bruising around the woman's neck.

A floorboard creaked loudly behind Clara in the empty hallway, snapping her attention away from the photo.

"Who’s there?" Clara called out, her voice echoing nervously through the cavernous, darkened house.

No answer came. Only the low, rhythmic hum of the central heating system slicing through the terrifying silence. Clara slowly stood up, clutching the old photograph tightly in her fist as she crept toward the dark hallway. The shadows seemed to stretch and twist into unnatural shapes under the moonlight streaming through the tall bay windows.

Suddenly, a heavy hand clamped down firmly over Clara’s mouth, suffocating her scream before it could even form in her throat.

"I told you to keep your mouth shut," a deep, chillingly familiar voice whispered directly into her ear.

Clara’s eyes widened in sheer, agonizing terror as a cold, sharp blade pressed gently against the sensitive skin of her neck.
