Chapter 14 - Shattered Illusions

Julian slowly lowered the heavy iron poker, letting the tip clatter loudly against the wooden floorboards. He turned entirely away from Clara and Detective Vance, fixing his cold, calculating gaze upon his wife standing in the shattered doorway. The thick gray smoke from the canister began to thin, drawn out by the open, broken window behind the desk.
"You think a wooden bat and a desperate plea are going to save you, Elena?" Julian asked, his voice dripping with absolute arrogance as he took a slow, deliberate step toward her. "The police have no jurisdiction over international waters. By morning, my private jet will be wheels up."
Elena didn't flinch. She planted her feet firmly on the threshold, her grip tightening around the wooden baseball bat until her knuckles turned stark white.
"You always underestimated me, Julian," Elena said, her voice steady and echoing with the full weight of her suffering. "You thought locking me away or framing Clara would keep your secrets buried forever. But you forgot one crucial detail."
Julian paused, a flicker of genuine uncertainty crossing his eyes for the very first time.
"What detail?" he demanded, his voice losing a fraction of its smooth composure.
"The federal marshals didn't wait for your scheduled cloud upload," Elena replied, a triumphant, bitter smile touching her lips. "They intercepted your encrypted server keys three hours ago. Your offshore accounts are frozen, your passports are flagged globally, and every single asset you own has already been seized by the state."
Julian’s face drained of all color. The facade of invincibility shattered instantly, replaced by a sudden, frantic desperation as he realized his empire had completely vanished into thin air.
Before Julian could lunge toward the open window to make his escape, Detective Vance sprang up from the floor, lunging forward with incredible speed. Vance tackled Julian squarely around the waist, sending both men crashing heavily into the mahogany bookshelf books tumbling down like falling dominoes.

Clara scrambled backward, gasping for air, while Elena stood tall in the doorway, lowering the bat as the wail of approaching federal and local sirens filled the cool night air outside.
