Chapter 8

Arthur slowly lowered his glass, setting it down on the mahogany desk with a sharp clink that echoed in the silent library. His eyes darted from Evelyn to Marcus, calculating the angles of betrayal with the cold precision of a chess master.

"You called the Federal regulators, Evelyn?" Arthur asked, his voice dangerously low. "Do you realize what an SEC investigation will do to the stock prices? You’ll destroy everything your husband and your children hope to inherit."

"Julian inherits nothing if he’s rotting in a federal prison for corporate fraud," Evelyn shot back, stepping fully into the room and standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Clara. "And neither do you, Arthur. The game is over. The board meeting on Tuesday isn't going to happen because by sunrise, this estate will be cordoned off by federal agents."

Marcus Vance stepped forward, adjusting his rimless glasses with a practiced, arrogant smirk. "You're bluffing, Evelyn. You don't have the clearance codes to access the encrypted server backups. Without those, any call to the SEC is just a disgruntled family complaint that will get tied up in our legal department for years."

Clara watched Marcus closely. She remembered the flash drives sitting inside the open safe right beside the paper files. Without a word, she reached down, scooped up the smallest drive labeled Backup_2024, and slipped it into the pocket of her wool coat.

Marcus’s eyes caught the movement. His confident smirk vanished instantly. "Give that back, Clara."

"No," Clara said firmly, her voice carrying a steely resonance that surprised even herself. "This drive goes to the authorities. Along with the medical records you forged to frame me."

Arthur moved with astonishing speed for a man his age. He lunged around the desk, his hand reaching out to grab Clara’s wrist, but Evelyn moved faster, intercepting him with a sharp shove that sent the old man stumbling against the edge of the leather armchair.

"Don't touch her!" Evelyn yelled, her restraint finally breaking under the weight of years of abuse and manipulation.

Marcus lunged forward to grab Evelyn, but the library doors swung wide open a third time, slamming against the paneled walls with a resounding crash.

Julian stood in the doorway, breathing heavily, his dark tuxedo jacket completely missing, his white shirt stained with sweat. In his hand, he held a heavy iron fireplace poker. His eyes were wide, darting wildly around the room until they locked on Arthur, then on Clara, and finally on his wife, Evelyn.

"It’s over," Julian panted, lowering the poker slightly. "The perimeter gates... they’re already breached. Not by the SEC. By the press."
