As the sedan rolled down the long, tree-lined drive of the Sterling estate, Clara looked back through the rear window. The massive wrought-iron gates parted slowly for their vehicle, and beyond them, the sprawling mansion shrank in the distance until it was nothing more than a silhouette of gray stone and slate roofs swallowed by the rolling hills.
In the backseat, Lily had already fallen back asleep against the plush upholstery, her breathing calm and steady, the bandage on her forehead a fading reminder of a trauma she was young enough to eventually forget.
Dr. Hayes sat in the front passenger seat, turning around to offer Clara a reassuring nod. "The medical reports have been filed with the state family court," he said quietly. "Full custody has been granted to you unconditionally, with a restraining order barring any contact from Arthur or his legal representatives."
"And the corporate fallout?" Clara asked, watching the countryside blur past the window.
"Sterling Enterprises is being restructured under a federal receivership," Hayes replied. "Marcus Vance has already resigned, and the board is liquidating assets to pay back the misappropriated funds. The dynasty is effectively dismantled."
Clara closed her eyes, letting out a long, slow breath. The invisible armor she had worn for five years finally dissolved completely. She wasn't a hostage, a pawn, or a subordinate anymore. She was simply Clara—a mother taking her daughter home.
