Chapter 12

Clara carried her suitcase down the grand staircase one final time. The polished marble floor gleamed under the midday sun streaming through the skylight, no longer looking menacing or slick, just cold and indifferent.
In the foyer, Julian stood waiting near the front entrance. He looked smaller, stripped of his tailored tuxedo and his arrogant posture. He held a small leather folio containing his personal effects. As Clara reached the bottom step, he looked up, his expression a mix of deep regret and profound shame.
"I’m sorry, Clara," Julian said, his voice barely above a whisper. "For all of it. I should have protected you and Lily from him. From my family."
Clara stopped on the second-to-last step, looking at the man she had married out of naive hope and stayed with out of misplaced loyalty. She didn't feel anger toward him anymore; she only felt pity.
"You chose the family dynasty over your own flesh and blood, Julian," Clara said steadily, her voice calm and detached. "And in the end, you lost both. I hope you find some peace in this empty house. Because I never will."
Julian didn't try to answer. He simply lowered his head and stepped aside, clearing the path to the heavy oak double doors.
Clara walked past him without looking back. She pushed the doors open, stepping out onto the expansive stone porch where the crisp afternoon air hit her face like a refreshing wave.

Down the grand stone steps, Lily was waiting by the open door of a waiting sedan, holding a stuffed rabbit in one hand and waving happily with the other. Dr. Hayes stood beside the car, holding the door open for them both.
Clara felt a sudden, overwhelming surge of gratitude. The terror of the previous night felt like a lifetime away, eclipsed by the bright, unwritten horizon stretching out before them. She hurried down the steps, her heels clicking softly against the stone, leaving the Sterling estate and its dark legacy far behind.
