Chapter 15

Six months later, the autumn wind carried the crisp scent of salt and turning leaves across the coastal cliffs. Clara sat in a comfortable rocking chair on the wide front porch of the cottage, a mug of hot herbal tea resting in her hands.
Through the large front windows, she could hear Lily laughing softly in the kitchen as she helped bake apple muffins with simple flour-dusted hands, completely healed and thriving in their new, peaceful routine. The scar on Lily’s forehead had faded to a thin, barely noticeable silver line—a quiet testament to a battle survived rather than a wound that defined her.
Clara looked out past the porch railing toward the horizon, where the deep blue ocean met the endless autumn sky. The news of the Sterling trial had long since faded from the front pages. Arthur Sterling remained behind bars awaiting his final sentencing, while Marcus and Julian navigated the slow, grinding machinery of corporate bankruptcy and legal disgrace. Evelyn had successfully relocated to the south of France, occasionally sending postcards filled with descriptions of art galleries, blooming gardens, and a newfound, hard-won peace.
Clara didn't keep track of them anymore. Their world of marble, secrets, and blood had no power here.
She set her mug down on the small wooden table beside her and reached into her pocket, pulling out a small, blank notebook. Opening to the first clean page, she picked up a pen, ready to write the first chapter of a story entirely of her own making—one without villains, without staircases, and without shadows.

The front door opened a crack, and Lily peeked out, holding up a warm, slightly lopsided muffin on a small plate. "Mommy, time for a break!"
Clara smiled, closing the blank notebook and standing up to take her daughter's hand. As they walked back inside together, the afternoon sun washed over them in a warm, unbroken glow, illuminating a future that was finally, beautifully their own.
