Chapter 2

Arthur Sterling’s heavy footsteps descended the grand staircase with deliberate, measured cruelty. Every heel strike against the polished wood felt like a hammer blow against Clara’s fraying nerves. She kept her arms wrapped securely around little Lily, whose breathing had grown shallow and dangerously quiet. Evelyn remained kneeling on the blood-stained marble, her white suit ruined, her jaw clenched in a mask of silent fury.
Elena Vance stepped backward into the shadows of the arched hallway, smoothing the fabric of her silver sequined dress with trembling fingers. She refused to meet Arthur’s piercing gaze, though a flicker of panic crossed her otherwise composed features. Julian Vance remained frozen near the parlor doors, his fists clenched so tightly his knuckles shone white beneath the chandelier's harsh glare.
"I asked a question," Arthur repeated, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper as he reached the bottom step. He stood towering over them, his gaze scanning the scene with the cold detachment of a courtroom judge. "In this house, nobody touches a Sterling. Elena, care to explain why the floor by the East Wing landing is slicker than an ice rink?"
Elena raised her chin, injecting a brittle confidence into her tone. "An unfortunate housekeeping oversight, Arthur. You know how the staff struggles with the imported wax. It has nothing to do with me."
"Housekeeping does not wax the landing twenty minutes before guest arrival," Evelyn snapped, her voice trembling with grief and outrage. She shifted Lily slightly, wincing as fresh blood soaked through her white sleeve. "You wanted to teach Clara a lesson about the trust fund distribution. You just didn't care that a child would pay the price."
Clara stared at Evelyn in brief astonishment. For years, Evelyn and Clara had circled each other like wary predators, bound only by the tangled web of corporate marriages and social obligations that defined the Sterling empire. Yet tonight, holding a bleeding child, the invisible walls between them had instantly dissolved. They were mothers first, trapped in a den of wolves.
Arthur narrowed his eyes, looking between Elena and Julian. He knew his family; he had built this dynasty on suspicion and mutual blackmail. Nothing in this mansion happened by chance, least of all a near-fatal fall on the primary staircase.
"Get the girl to the private medical wing," Arthur commanded, signaling two towering security guards who had materialized silently from the hallway. "And lock the estate gates. Nobody leaves this property until I find out who authorized that wax job."

Julian stepped forward, his dark tuxedo shifting as he blocked the path to the East Wing. "You can't lock us in, Arthur. This is an overreaction. Accidents happen."
"Move, Julian," Arthur said softly, his hand resting casually inside his jacket pocket, where everyone in the room knew a polished silver revolver rested. "Before I decide your accident was intentional, too."
