Chapter 1

The crystal chandelier above the grand staircase cast a brittle, fractured light across the polished marble floor of the Sterling estate. Clara Sterling barely had time to register the blur of light blue silk before her five-year-old daughter, Lily, slipped on the slick imported stone. Lily’s soft cry of distress—a tiny, helpless "Ah!"—cut through the heavy evening air like shattered glass.
Clara watched in paralyzed horror as the child pitched forward, her small frame striking the unforgiving floor with sickening finality. From the periphery of the vast hallway, Elena Vance in her glittering silver sequined gown stood motionless, her expression unreadable as the child crumpled.
Before Clara could draw breath, Evelyn Vance rushed past her, dropping hard onto the cold marble. Evelyn’s immaculate white suit stained instantly with crimson as she gathered the bleeding child into her arms, rocking her with a fierce, desperate intensity. The anguish in Evelyn’s voice tore through the cavernous space.
"She’s a five-year-old child! How could you?" Evelyn screamed, her tear-streaked face turning toward Elena, who simply adjusted the diamond bracelet on her wrist.
Clara knelt beside Evelyn, her hands trembling as she tried to stem the flow of blood from Lily’s forehead. The air grew suffocatingly cold. Across the hallway, Julian Vance stepped out of the shadows, his dark tuxedo rigid, a bowtie cutting sharply against his neck. Julian’s eyes were wide, bloodshot, and burning with a dark, terrifying rage. His bared teeth flashed in the chandelier light.
"You, you both deserved it!" Julian spat, his voice a low, venomous growl that vibrated through the floorboards.
Clara’s heart pounded against her ribs. This wasn't a tragic accident. The polished marble had been waxed with a specialized oil just minutes before the guests arrived—an oil only the estate management touched. Elena had been standing right beside the control panel.
A heavy, solemn silence fell over the lower hall, broken only by Lily’s ragged breathing. Then, the rhythmic sound of leather shoes echoed from the upper landing. Arthur Sterling, the patriarch of the family, emerged from the shadows at the top of the grand staircase. He stood tall in his dark suit, his gaze cold, calculating, and utterly devoid of warmth as he looked down at the carnage below.

"Who laid a hand on my daughter and my granddaughter?" Arthur’s voice boomed, carrying an absolute authority that silenced every breath in the room.
Several guests, frozen in shock at the base of the stairs, turned their terrified faces upward. Clara looked up, her tears hot on her cheeks, knowing that Arthur’s arrival marked not salvation, but the opening of a much deeper, bloodier vault of secrets.
