Chapter 7

The library door swung wide open, flooding the dark room with harsh hallway light. Arthur Sterling stood in the doorway, his dark suit immaculate despite the late hour, his silver hair neatly combed. He didn't look surprised to see Clara kneeling by his open safe. In fact, a cold, knowing smile played at the corners of his thin lips.

"I wondered how long it would take you to find that drawer, Clara," Arthur said softly, stepping into the room and closing the door behind him with a dull thud. He didn't reach for a weapon; his presence alone was a cage.

Clara slowly rose to her feet, clutching the Contingency Plan folder tightly against her chest like a shield. "You were going to frame me, weren't you? After pushing Lily down the stairs, you were going to use these fabricated medical reports to declare me unstable and take my daughter away."

Arthur walked slowly toward his desk, pouring himself a fresh glass of scotch without breaking eye contact. "You lack imagination, Clara. Lily is a Sterling. She belongs to the dynasty, not to a frightened girl who married into our name out of debt." He took a slow sip, the amber liquid catching the dim light. "Julian was weak. He chose you because you reminded him of his mother—soft, compliant, easily managed. But companies aren't run by sentiment. They are run by control."

"You nearly killed your own granddaughter to secure a corporate vote," Clara said, her voice trembling with a rage she no longer tried to suppress. "You are a monster."

Arthur’s expression hardened, any pretense of paternal warmth vanishing completely. "I built this empire from the dirt, Clara. Every brick, every ship, every dollar is stained with compromises you are too naive to comprehend. If sacrificing a knee or a forehead teaches the family discipline, it is a small price to pay."

Before Arthur could finish his sentence, the library door burst open again.

Evelyn stood in the frame, breathing heavily, her hair slightly disheveled. Behind her, Marcus Vance stood with a cold, calculating expression, holding a heavy brass candlestick.

"The diversion didn't hold, Arthur," Marcus said smoothly, stepping past Evelyn into the room. "And it seems our domestic dispute has escalated into corporate treason."

Evelyn looked at Clara, then down at the open safe and the manila folder in Clara's hands. A flash of profound understanding passed between the two women. The illusion of safety within the Sterling household had officially shattered. They were standing in the lion's den, completely surrounded.

"You're too late, Marcus," Evelyn said, her voice steady and clear. "The files are out. And outside these gates, the SEC audit team is already waiting for my signal."

Arthur paused, his glass halting halfway to his mouth. For the first time all evening, a genuine flicker of doubt crossed the old man's eyes.
