Chapter 14

The sedan turned down a narrow gravel driveway framed by wild hydrangeas and tall sea grasses, coming to a gentle halt in front of a modest, weather-beaten wooden cottage painted a soft, welcoming shade of pale blue. A wide wooden porch wrapped around the front of the house, shaded by a sprawling oak tree whose leaves whispered softly in the coastal breeze.
Lily stirred in the backseat, her eyes blinking open as she looked out the window at the cottage. "Mommy? Is this our new house?"
Clara smiled, reaching back to gently stroke her daughter’s soft hair. "Yes, sweetie. This is home."
Dr. Hayes helped unload their suitcases, placing them gently on the wooden porch before bidding them a warm farewell and promising to check in next week. As his car disappeared down the gravel drive, a profound, beautiful silence settled over the property.
Clara unlocked the front door. The interior smelled of freshly polished pine, sea salt, and sunlight. There were no grand staircases, no crystal chandeliers, and no hidden safes behind mahogany panels. Just a cozy living room with a stone fireplace, a small kitchen with white cabinets, and a set of simple, sturdy wooden stairs leading up to a sunlit bedroom overlooking the ocean.

Lily immediately ran inside, dropping her stuffed rabbit on the living room rug and spinning around with a joyful laugh that echoed purely through the empty rooms. There was no fear in her voice, only the bright, untbothered music of a five-year-old child experiencing true freedom for the very first time.
Clara stood in the doorway, watching her daughter dance across the wooden floorboards. She felt a tear slip down her cheek, but this time, it was a tear of pure, unadulterated relief. The nightmare at the Sterling mansion was over, and their real life had finally begun.
