Chapter 4

The heavy oak doors of the Sterling library remained locked from the inside, casting long, menacing shadows across the Persian rugs. Arthur sat behind the massive mahogany desk, a glass of amber scotch resting untouched near his right hand. Across from him sat Marcus Vance, Julian’s older brother and the chief legal counsel for Sterling Enterprises. Marcus adjusted his rimless glasses, his expression entirely devoid of panic.

"You're making a mistake locking the estate down, Arthur," Marcus said smoothly, his voice carrying the practiced cadence of a trial lawyer. "The board will panic if word gets out that the Sterling family is holding its own members hostage over a domestic mishap."

Arthur took a slow sip of air, his cold eyes fixed on Marcus. "A child fell down my stairs because someone sabotaged the flooring, Marcus. That isn't a domestic mishap. That's a declaration of war."

"And you assume it was internal?" Marcus asked, raising an eyebrow. "External competitors have been trying to crack our logistics contracts for months. Any number of disgruntled contractors could have bribed a maid."

"The maids don't have access to the private east wing wax schedule," Arthur countered softly, leaning forward. "Only the executive board members have those clearance codes. That means the threat is sitting right outside my library doors."

Marcus leaned back, resting his hands on the armrests. "If we're talking about board clearance, Clara and Evelyn both have codes, too. Clara stands to inherit the shipping division if Julian’s expansion fails, and Evelyn has been quietly buying up independent shares through third-party trusts."

Arthur’s gaze sharpened. "You've been auditing my daughters-in-law?"

"I audit everyone, Arthur. It’s my job," Marcus replied without hesitation. "Clara isn't the fragile housewife she pretends to be. And Evelyn has never forgiven the family for freezing her out of the London acquisition last year. Any one of them could have orchestrated the fall to draw sympathy and shift the board's alignment."

Outside in the dimly lit hallway, Clara stood frozen just inches from the heavy mahogany door. She had come to fetch a blanket from the linen closet, but the sound of Marcus’s voice carrying through the thick wood had arrested her steps.

Clara isn't the fragile housewife she pretends to be.

The words echoed in her mind, stinging with truth. For five years, she had played the submissive, quiet wife to Julian, swallowing every insult and covering up every financial misstep to protect Lily's future. But hearing Marcus dissect her motives like a legal brief awakened a cold, dormant survival instinct. She wasn't just a victim here. She was a primary target in a war she had never wanted to fight.

Quietly, Clara stepped back into the shadows, clutching her silver sequined dress tightly against her waist, and walked back toward the medical wing with a new, hardened resolve.
