Chapter 8: The Simple Life

Over the next two weeks, the atmosphere inside the estate began to transform. The cold, lifeless halls were no longer silent.
Ethan stopped wearing his tailored suits, opting instead for simple flannel shirts and jeans. He spent his afternoons working alongside Clara, clearing out decades of accumulated clutter from the estate's sprawling carriage house. They uncovered Julian’s old woodworking tools, dusty but preserved under canvas cloths.
One afternoon, while cleaning a set of heavy brass chisels, Clara sat on a wooden workbench, watching Ethan repair a broken wooden frame.
"You look different," she noted with a soft smile.
"Different good, or different tired?" Ethan asked, wiping wood dust from his hands.
"Different peaceful," she replied. "The first day I saw you here, you looked like a ghost walking through a museum. You had everything, but you looked like you owned nothing."
Ethan paused, looking at his hands. "I spent ten years trying to earn approval from people who only valued what I could produce for them. My father, Victoria, her family... it was an endless race where the finish line kept moving." He looked up at her. "Julian was the smart one. He walked away before it destroyed him."

"He didn't walk away because he was running," Clara corrected gently. "He walked away because he knew what was worth keeping."
Ethan looked at the old workshop around them. The smell of cedar and oil filled the air. For the first time, he realized that the vast estate didn't have to be a symbol of cold wealth—it could become a haven.
