Chapter 1: The Shattered Mirror

The silence following Ethan’s command hung heavy in the vast, grand hallway. The crystalline chandeliers overhead cast a cold, brilliant glow over the polished marble floor, reflecting the tension that gripped all three people. Victoria stood frozen, her eyes burning with a volatile mix of fury and betrayal. Her red silk dress, vibrant and striking against the stark white paneled walls, rustled softly as her breathing grew ragged.
Ethan remained knelt beside Clara, his hand resting softly over her trembling fingers on her pregnant belly. His touch was firm yet remarkably gentle, a stark contrast to the rigid posture he maintained toward Victoria. Beneath his white unbuttoned shirt, his chest rose and fell in measured breaths. The tattoo on his neck—a faded cross—seemed to mark the line between the dark past he had walked away from and the fragile future he was trying to protect.
"You're protecting her?" Victoria repeated, her voice dropping from a screech to a dangerously low tremble. She gestured toward Clara, whose blue maid apron was wrinkled, tear-stained, and dusted with faint white plaster from the wall she had slid down. "A maid, Ethan? You're choosing her over everything we built?"
"I am protecting what is right, Victoria," Ethan replied calmly, his voice low and unwavering. He slowly stood up, placing himself entirely between the two women. "Look at what you've become. Violence. Threats. Breaking things because you can't control everyone around you."
Clara looked up through a blur of tears, wiping her cheek with the back of her wrist. She felt the heavy burden of the secret she had kept for months—the truth about who she was and why she had taken a job in the mansion. She wasn't just a servant passing through; she was the missing piece of a promise made years ago.

"Leave, Victoria," Ethan said softly, pointing toward the long corridor leading to the double oak doors. "Before I make you."
Victoria sneered, taking a step backward. "This isn't over. You think you can just step out of our world and play the hero? You'll regret this." With a sharp turn, her high heels clicking loudly against the marble, she disappeared down the hall.
