Chapter 5: A Line in the Sand

Ethan stared at his father-in-law, realizing just how familiar this conversation felt. For years, every conflict had been reduced to assets, mergers, and reputation. Human beings were merely variables on a balance sheet.
"She isn't just staff, Richard," Ethan said, his tone deadly quiet. "She is Julian's wife. And she is carrying my nephew."
Richard’s expression shifted instantly. The polished composure faltered for a fraction of a second, replaced by something dark and guarded. "Julian is dead. He walked away from his rights to this estate years ago. Whatever woman he dragged out of the gutter has no standing here."
"She has my standing," Ethan stepped closer, his physical presence towering over the older man. "Julian left this estate because he couldn't stomach the coldness of this family. I stayed because I thought I could change it from the inside. But I was wrong."
"Think very carefully about your next move, Ethan," Richard warned, pointing a finger at his chest. "If you side with this girl and turn your back on Victoria, I will pull every cent of funding from your company. You will lose the estate, your reputation, and your freedom under the weight of the debt."
"Then pull it," Ethan said without a moment's hesitation.
Richard blinked, stunned by the absolute lack of fear in Ethan's eyes. "You're bluffing."

"Try me," Ethan said, opening the grand door wide to the pouring rain outside. "Get out of my house."
Richard stared at him for a long moment, realization dawning on him that the young man he thought he controlled was no longer under his thumb. Without another word, Richard pulled his collar up and walked out into the stormy night.
