Chapter 12: The Open Door

A year passed, bringing with it the steady, peaceful rhythms of hard work and community. The Vance Estate was no longer known as a cold, imposing fortress on the hill. It was now simply "The Workshop"—a place where local craftsmen, woodworkers, and artists gathered to create furniture and art sold across the region.
The grand hallway, where Victoria had once screamed in anger and Clara had fallen in despair, was now filled with warmth. The polished marble floors held the soft echoes of children's footsteps, and large wooden tables filled the rooms, displaying handcrafted tables, chairs, and sculptures.
One afternoon, Ethan stood near the front entrance, watching little Julian, now a toddler taking his first uncertain steps across the rug, giggled as Clara caught him in her arms.
A car pulled up outside—not a sleek luxury sedan, but a modest local delivery van. A delivery driver stepped out, leaving a stack of mail on the porch table before driving away.
Ethan walked out to gather the letters. Among the local utility bills and lumber invoices was an unmarked white envelope addressed directly to him.
He opened it. Inside was a simple card with a single handwritten line:
May you like
“I heard the hall is no longer empty. I am glad you found what Julian was looking for.”
It was unsigned, but the elegant, sharp cursive was unmistakably Victoria’s. There was no anger in the note, only a quiet, distant acknowledgment. Ethan folded the card slowly and placed it in his pocket, feeling the final lingering knot of bitterness dissolve completely.
