Chapter 3: Secrets Beneath the Surface

Ethan stared at the silver medallion in Clara’s hand, memories from twelve years ago rushing back. That medallion belonged to his older brother, Julian, who had disappeared under mysterious circumstances after refusing to take over the family business. Julian had walked away into the night, leaving behind only rumors and a family broken by pride.
"Julian gave that to you," Ethan stated, it was not a question, but a quiet realization.
Clara nodded slowly, a small, sad smile touching her lips. "I met him six years ago in a small town up north. He was working at a local wood shop, going by a different name. He didn't want the fortune, Ethan. He just wanted a quiet life."
"Where is he now?" Ethan asked, his voice tight with an emotion he had suppressed for a decade.
"He passed away ten months ago," Clara whispered, her eyes brimming with fresh tears. "An illness. He fought it quietly, without asking anyone for help. Before he died, he gave me this medallion and told me that if I ever needed shelter or truth, I should find his brother."
Ethan leaned back, pressing his palms against his face. All those years, he had believed Julian had abandoned him out of selfishness. The family narrative had painted Julian as a traitor who tore the family legacy apart. But standing in front of Clara, holding the child of the brother he lost, Ethan saw the truth: Julian hadn't fled out of weakness; he had fled to preserve his soul.
"And you came here as a maid?" Ethan asked, looking up.

"I didn't want charity," Clara explained softly. "I wanted to see what kind of man you were before I trusted you with his child. I wanted to know if this house was still a prison, or if someone inside it had a heart."
Ethan looked around the cold, pristine mansion. "It is a prison. But it doesn't have to be."
